Telling your story on social media

September 2, 2021/in Telling Your Business Story/by The Content Alchemist

Social Media is an immediate form of content that’s fast paced and mainly focused on the present. So, when you’re telling your business story using this medium, it’s important not to spend too much time dwelling on history.

Because of the speed at which social media moves, sharing the in-the-moment parts of your story (e.g., the ‘here and now’ of your business life) will be far more interesting and engaging for your followers.

So, what are you doing now?

The purpose of social media is, of course, to be social!! And one of the best ways to do this is with story-led content. It engages followers and makes them feel connected to you and your business.

If we’re honest, we all love a bit of a behind the scenes look at people’s lives and businesses. It allows us to connect to the humans behind the brand. This accelerates the time it takes to build the all-important know, like and trust with people.

More often than not it’s the off-the-cuff, raw, unedited perspective that generates the most interest and interaction. Now I’m not suggesting you literally lay everything out, warts and all, for your followers to see. But the more real and in the moment your stories are on social media the better.

For example, (with their permission) welcome new clients on board with a short share about the type of work you’ll be doing together and how much you’re looking forward to working with them. And share the love by including links to their website or social media channels as well so your followers can connect with them.

Or perhaps you could shoot a short video of your team at work or a walk around your office. This lets your followers see your working environment, which in turn helps them to connect your business with your people and physical location, making you far more relatable.

So much of your business story when it comes to social media is about sharing what is happening RIGHT NOW. And don’t be afraid to include the funny little things that go on as well, after all we all love a bloopers reel!

Relationships are everything

I can’t stress enough how powerful your business story is for building and maintaining relationships with customers old and new.

The way we make purchasing decisions is constantly changing, and now more than ever people look for a sense of personal connection and aligned ethics and values with a business before they’ll make a purchase. This change in behaviour means that people’s BS radars are far more alert, and they want businesses to be honest and show it as it really is.

Memories are powerful

Taking the occasional walk down memory lane with your business story can be a really powerful exercise.

When we look at successful people and businesses, we often forget that it’s taken years of blood, sweat and tears to get to the place they’re at. The reality is there’s no such thing as an overnight success. So, sharing memories is a great way to remind people where your business started and how far you’ve come on your journey.

And remember, your business story isn’t just about what’s happened in the past or is happening in the present. Your future aspirations for your business are all part of your story too so, where appropriate, share insider scoops to keep your followers excited and onboard with the direction you’re heading in.

If you want help breaking your story down into bitesize chunks that are engaging in a fast-paced environment, the best place to start is to book in for a free content review. Together we can ensure your story is being shared in the most impactful way possible.
